The load may be on a sleigh or trolley, and the dog must cover a distance of several meters in a specific period of time. It resembles such an interesting type of sporting events as tractor-pulling, where trucks and tractors take part, and their task is to drag a platform weighing several tens of tons through a segment with a dirt surface for a certain amount of time. But in the case of a dog weightpull, the main traction machine is a dog.

History of origin

The idea of founding such competitions first arose as a result of using large dogs of northern breeds to move weights. The first mention of weatherpulling is on the pages of the book “The Call of the Ancestors”, authored by Jack London, as well as in some other books and works of those times. They talk about working dogs that were carrying heavy loads of gold miners. Initially, this dog competition was just a part of dog racing with teams.

The winners of these competitions after participated in competitions in the movement of weight, in order to find out which dogs from all those participating are not only the fastest, but also the strongest. Since then, something has undergone changes and state Today, weight pulling is an organized power sport with a clear set of rules, requirements and restrictions.

In a weightpull competition, the most important element of all equipment is the aforementioned harness – belt equipment that is worn on the body of the dog, like a seat belt on a pilot of a racing car.

The harness should correspond to this type of competition, therefore it is usually made from synthetic fabrics, for example from kapron or kevlar. In fact, the whole design of this harness resembles an elongated sled harness from a sleigh. In some parts of the harness, there should be special soft lining-seals, since there will be a high load in the places of their contact with the body and hence there is a high risk of injury.

Essence of weightpulling

Several straps and a lining evenly distribute the load on the body of the dog, but the main one comes on chest straps. In order for the dog to safely participate in these competitions, the harness must first of all be the same size as the dog’s body. In addition, before the dog gets used to the harness should pass a certain time. Best of all, if this is the time spent training and preparing the animal for the competition, and you need to use only one harness. During training and the dog will develop the front part of the body and relief muscles.

Usually, strong and active dogs of breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Husky, Siberian Husky and some others are prepared for the weightpulling competitions. These are active and energetic dogs that are distinguished by increased endurance and physical activity. Huskies and Siberian Huskies are known as one of the most aggressive breeds. Participation of dogs in competitions and active training is a great way to realize the energy of a dog, because if you don’t find a use for it, the dog will be bored, over time it will become aggressive and will try to pour out its aggression in fights. Not only physical strength, but also psychological endurance, perseverance, firmness and confidence develop in dogs for weightpulling and preliminary training in dogs.

Choice of harness for weightpulling

If you decide to provide your dog with this useful activity, then you need a weypling harness. Manufacturers of such equipment is not so much, but, let’s say, enough. If you search the Internet for manufacturers and distributors of such products, the choice is quite large, and it is not limited to a small number of offers. The only problem is that the price of the harness will make you very surprised. Their prices range from a moderate 1,500 rubles to as much as 2,000 rubles and higher in Russia, and also from 700 to 1,000 and more hryvnias in Ukraine.

Are there many such owners of dogs that are ready to fork out for a rather big amount for the sake of such a device that is not difficult in its construction? It is unlikely, therefore, most owners of dogs, having learned how much this pleasure costs, begin to actively “google” useful information on how to make a harness with their own hands. The design of the harness is quite simple, so it will require a minimum of skills.

It also happened that the dog pulled out and the leash and at the same time fell under the car, and all because the rivets on the harness were very weak, almost from sheet metal. Therefore, if you want something better and more reliable, then you will need to spend money on the necessary materials and a little time for production.

Harness for weightpull do it yourself

  • transverse rear strap, whose length is 90-110 centimeters;
  • transverse front strap – about 45 to 65 centimeters in length;

Strong steel rivets can be used to connect the belts to each other, but it is best to take sewing tools and use strong nylon threads or fishing line. In joints put several seams, as they say “the more the better” for reliability. It is undesirable to pierce holes for fasteners with some kind of sharp instrument, or to burn them with a hot awl. Fiber straps intertwined with each other are a guarantee of reliability, and by damaging them you make the sling less durable. Alternatively, you can take a couple of nails and gently push them between the fibers without damaging them, and then smear it all with superglue.

In the process of curing the glue, it is necessary to turn the nails so that they do not stick to the sling. When superglue impregnates the fibers and hardens, it forms something like a composite laminated fiber, such as glass fiber. The nails need to be removed and there will be the necessary holes in this place. As rings, you need to use strong steel rings so that they do not unbend under load.

Another version of the harness, which uses six belts:

  • front strap that will cover the neck – 75-95 centimeters;
  • back strap that will cover the chest – 90-110 centimeters;
  • three longitudinal belt length from 20 to 40 centimeters;
  • the lower belt that will be under the breast is 35 to 55 centimeters long.

In the manufacture of the harness on the last sample uses the same materials, but all the lines are connected to each other at right angles. The indicated dimensions in centimeters are not exact and are fitted according to the parameters to the growth of the Siberian Husky of medium size. All calculations must be done taking into account the dimensions of the body of the animal. Shleyku can also be used to walk the dog because, unlike the collar, it does not squeeze the airways and blood vessels.
